International Danish students learning to save lives at North Coast TAFE

Kingscliff TAFE Campus has welcomed 16 Danish students from Aalborg Technical College as part of a 5 month International Study and Cultural Program. These North Coast TAFE programs give international students the opportunity to study abroad in Australia whilst still completing their current senior school qualifications.

As part of the cultural program there is an emphasis on the importance of becoming competent in the water. Students will complete a surf-safety certificate and participate in learn to surf lessons.

The students are currently learning basic first aid, swim strokes and rescue techniques at Kingscliff pool before they progress to the ocean.

“Their water skills will definitely come in handy when they test the flotation of their hand made ‘environmentally friendly’ surfboards. This is a project that has been integrated into their studies and offers a unique learning experience that reflects our Australian culture,” says Brendan McKenna, Head Teacher Education Employment & Support.

Local families from the Tweed region will host students for the duration of their stay, encouraging them to become involved in family activities and getting a feel for the life we lead here on the beautiful North Coast.

“I am an only child so being hosted in a family with 5 siblings is a totally different environment, it is very noisy yet lots of fun and full of life,” says Magnus Stensli.

There are a number of exciting excursions planned for the group such as Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, Dream World and a backpacking trip that includes Carnarvon Gorge and the Great Barrier Reef.

A pastoral care session that the students attend once a week at TAFE gives them the opportunity to discuss cultural differences, gain support and decipher our Australian slang as well as becoming fluent speakers of English.
